Notes:

Thucydides (previously quoted), arguably the greatest of all ancient historians, is the ultimate source for information on Alcibiades. Thomas Hobbes’ famous translation (original cover shown here) reintroduced his wonderfully insightful Histories to the Western world in 1676. Thucydides devoted many chapters of his Histories to the exploits of Alcibiades and was fascinated by his energy and intellect. Thucydides takes a very measured approach regarding Alcibiades and concludes that Athens might have won the war against Sparta if only they had kept Alcibiades in charge of the conflict. His famous assessment appears on the next slide.
